Trying Things On For Size

Hey there! Today I want to chat about furniture. Sometimes I get in a rut with furniture. I have things placed and I like them and I don’t change them. I used to move furniture around all the time in our previous home, but this house doesn’t seem to offer as many options. However, a month or so ago I got the bug to try a few new things.

While we were painting the family room, hubby and I started brainstorming and came up with a new layout.

It took a couple of days to adjust, but we love it. Here is what it looked like before.

It really functions better – all of the furniture is actually used now!

I had a bookshelf sitting in the garage that had moved out of one of the kids rooms, and one day I had a light bulb moment, and I moved it back inside.

I have been trying to find a solution for photo album storage. I don’t want them in a closet, because then they don’t get looked at, and if they are not being looked at then what’s the point.

This little corner of the hallway has served well as the “Greenwood Gallery” but now that the kids are older, this might be a better purpose.

Hubby picked up a basic kitchen cart this summer at a garage sale for $10. I had planned on using it outside on the patio, but I decided instead to try it out inside. In the kitchen.

I’ve always toyed with the idea of an island. Our kitchen is big, but not too big so there wouldn’t be room for anything large. Before I do any refinishing of this piece I’d like to live with it in this spot for a while to see if it’s going to work.

Sometimes it’s good to try things on for size and fit before making a big commitment. We shall see how these things go. πŸ™‚

Thoughts on Thursday

Not gonna say this is a series, but God has placed some things on my heart lately that I have wanted to share, so I am. πŸ™‚ This week a sweet, encouraging friend posted a comment on my facebook page related to my last post.

It really got me thinking as to whether or not it was true. Do I never complain? I want to be that person. I pray that is the way it comes across here on the blog. We are richly blessed. God always provides for our needs and then some. Is money tight sometimes, absolutely! But we are never without.

As I thought about it I realized that I have finally come to a place in my life where I am usually fairly content. I used to struggle with envy and discontent all. the. time. The root of the problem was one thing – comparison.

Once in a bible study, while going through the ten commandments, we camped on “thou shalt not covet” (Exodus 20:17 NASB) for quite a while. At that time, God got a hold of this sin in my life, made me aware of it, and began to change me.

I know that many of us struggle when scrolling through blog posts, or pinterest pictures, seeing beautiful images of things we know we will never have. What God did for me is to help me see the possibilities, and what I really wanted. Although the perfection in the picture or catalog was beautiful, what I really wanted was the feeling that was inspired by those spaces.

master bedroom update

My goal in my own home, is to create an atmosphere that my family will love to be in. This is not something you can get out of a magazine, or a catalog. It is something that is collected and created over time.

kitchen update

My goal on this blog is to share with you creative ways to get the look you want, even on a budget. Oh, yes. Sometimes I pitch a fit about how I would love to just drop $$$ on the real thing and not go through the hassle of the DIY (just ask my hubby). But, honestly, where’s the fun in that?? πŸ™‚
And, I’m not bad-mouthing those who buy out of a catalog or choose not to DIY. I’m just saying this is what works best for us in this stage of life. πŸ™‚

So, thank you to my sweet friend for her words, and again, I so hope that is exactly what comes out on these virtual pages week by week. God has overwhelmingly blessed us with the family and home we have, and my prayer is to learn to be more and more content everyday. Oh to have the mind of Paul.

Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.
-Philippians 4:11 (NASB)

Family Room Progress – Paint

A couple of weeks ago I hinted to the progress that I made in our family room.  Well, I’m finally back today to share with you more pics of our now light and bright family room!

I have to go back to Christmas for before pics because I was a bad blogger and didn’t take any before I started painting.  I was too excited!!

And maybe you remember what the fireplace looked like after I painted the brick.  (Soo glad I took the plunge – I love it! Still working on the mantle – I have a plan, just need time to get it done.)

Now here is what it looks like at this point.  We rearranged the furniture after we finished painting.

It had been in the same place for years, and I was ready for something new.  Really, I’m ready for new furniture, but that’s not quite in the budget yet.

When you have a kiddo in college thousands of miles away, plane tickets home are far more important than new furniture – amen?

I am loving the new paint.  It is Silver Screen by Glidden.  For the life of me I can’t find a picture online of the swatch so here is a shot I took with my phone just to prove that it’s a real thing! Geez!

It’s a pale gray, which of course is not represented well by this swatch.  It reads white in some light, and a very pale lavender in other light.  It really was just what I was looking for :).

I went back and forth about whether or not to paint the dark trim around the fireplace and above the built-ins (scroll back up to see in the pics).  It has always seemed awkward to me so paint it was, and it was definitely the right choice!  Yay for progress!!
