Loving The Home I Have

For years I struggled with dis-contentment. In the last couple of years, God has really helped me to see the blessings right in front of me. Including our current home. Like many people, when we moved here we never intended for it to be our forever home. And, maybe it won’t be, but maybe it will.

We spent 10 years living in a home that we weren’t totally happy with. We painted of course, hung things on walls, but we were living with a lot of imperfections, because we were convinced there was nothing we could do to make it better suited for our family.

Boy were we wrong!! Honestly, through reading how other real people transformed their houses to homes on various blogs, my heart was changed and I was inspired! Over these past couple years we have cleaned out clutter, organized spaces, designed and added personal touches to finally make it ours. So, so many times throughout the process I regretted not doing more of it sooner. If we would have taken the time to make these changes earlier we would have had more time to enjoy it!!

Then, there was this book.

I was intrigued by the title as soon as it was introduced. So when I got my copy from Melissa I couldn’t wait to dive in. Can I just say that it spoke to my soul. In such a way that I could only read a bit at a time. Like I would read a couple of chapters, and then take a couple of days to think over those chapters. (hence the reason it has taken me so long to write this – the book is now on the best seller list!)

It was so encouraging to me!!

I love the way Melissa describes so many different phases of life because really that’s the way life is. There are ups and downs. Highs and lows. Small homes and big homes. Too much and too little.

In every phase, Melissa shares how she makes each house a home. A big budget makes it easier, but a small budget doesn’t make it impossible. Creating a home is a process that doesn’t always happen overnight.

Maybe you’re feeling frustrated with your current phase. Maybe a little overwhelmed. If so, this book is for you! Maybe you love the look of your home, but the function, not so much – this book is for you. Really, this book is a great read for anyone, no matter what phase of life you might be in.

God is good, and He takes care of His own. Thanks Melissa for sharing, and encouraging us.

Thoughts on Thursday

Not gonna say this is a series, but God has placed some things on my heart lately that I have wanted to share, so I am. πŸ™‚ This week a sweet, encouraging friend posted a comment on my facebook page related to my last post.

It really got me thinking as to whether or not it was true. Do I never complain? I want to be that person. I pray that is the way it comes across here on the blog. We are richly blessed. God always provides for our needs and then some. Is money tight sometimes, absolutely! But we are never without.

As I thought about it I realized that I have finally come to a place in my life where I am usually fairly content. I used to struggle with envy and discontent all. the. time. The root of the problem was one thing – comparison.

Once in a bible study, while going through the ten commandments, we camped on “thou shalt not covet” (Exodus 20:17 NASB) for quite a while. At that time, God got a hold of this sin in my life, made me aware of it, and began to change me.

I know that many of us struggle when scrolling through blog posts, or pinterest pictures, seeing beautiful images of things we know we will never have. What God did for me is to help me see the possibilities, and what I really wanted. Although the perfection in the picture or catalog was beautiful, what I really wanted was the feeling that was inspired by those spaces.

master bedroom update

My goal in my own home, is to create an atmosphere that my family will love to be in. This is not something you can get out of a magazine, or a catalog. It is something that is collected and created over time.

kitchen update

My goal on this blog is to share with you creative ways to get the look you want, even on a budget. Oh, yes. Sometimes I pitch a fit about how I would love to just drop $$$ on the real thing and not go through the hassle of the DIY (just ask my hubby). But, honestly, where’s the fun in that?? πŸ™‚
And, I’m not bad-mouthing those who buy out of a catalog or choose not to DIY. I’m just saying this is what works best for us in this stage of life. πŸ™‚

So, thank you to my sweet friend for her words, and again, I so hope that is exactly what comes out on these virtual pages week by week. God has overwhelmingly blessed us with the family and home we have, and my prayer is to learn to be more and more content everyday. Oh to have the mind of Paul.

Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.
-Philippians 4:11 (NASB)
