Figuring Out The Root of The Problem

So, here we are.  We have pulled the sign in the yard, and I have decided that I am no longer going to feel “stuck” in the house, but I was going to make this house our home. Sadly we had lived here for 10 years before I made this decision…  🙁

I wasn’t quite sure where to start.  But, I knew that there were places in our home that just weren’t working for our family.  Reasons I was feeling stuck.

So, hubby and I began to discuss that.  We began to look around and take note of the problem areas – you know the ones – the ones that drive you crazy!!  Ya, like this

Or this

There were many more, these were just a couple of examples.  Some of them we realized were function problems.  The space simply didn’t function like we needed it to.  For instance, with the entryway.  There really wasn’t a landing place that was big enough for six people to drop bags, and shoes, and coats.

Other spaces were more form (aesthetic) problems.  Like the laundry room.  I didn’t have a problem getting the laundry done in the space really, but I hated being in there because it was a lifeless space.

Are you feeling stuck??  Are you not enjoying the blessing before you that is your home??  If so, walk through this process with me this month, day by day.

Step 1:  Evaluate your problem spaces – the ones that drive you crazy.  Decide what’s not working and why.  Is it a function issue or a form issue.

That’s it for today – not too hard right??

See you back here tomorrow :).

September Happenings

Here we are, almost to the end of September. Where does the time go these days?? Although, I’m actually okay with it because it means I am one month closer to having my boy home for a few days from college.  I’m telling you, having him far away for college has been one of the hardest things I have had to do as a parent so far. But, he is loving it and doing well and that blesses my heart immensely!

September is always  a time for me to regroup from summer.  A time to get the house, and my family back on track and back into a healthy routine.  It’s a good time. So, I thought I would share with you a little peak into what’s been going on around him with our little family.

If you follow me on instagram you’ve seen some of these pics.

The temps have dipped down cooling enough here and there and I have happily taken advantage of that by pulling out the boots and sweaters!!

Cooler temps in the evenings also means more walks with my honey – precious quality time.

(I don’t know what’s with the feet pictures??)

Cooler temps also signals my craving for fall foods and snacks!  Candy corn is #1 in my book. And, a homemade apple pie just can’t be beat!

Especially when you use grandma’s pie plate ;).

I officially have another teenager in the house! Love him!!  Birthday’s call for yummy birthday lunches, complete with old-time vanilla shakes :).

We’ve been watching this kiddo run cross-country for the first time this year and rockin’ it!

Got to see this precious face thanks to the wonderful world of technology.  Things like this do make the distance a tad easier.

I am a perpetual piler.  I admit it.  So, sometimes I have to go through the piles…

Happiest of days was winning this amazing paint sprayer through an instagram contest held by 11 Magnolia Lane and Home Right.  It came in the mail this week and I have a long list of things waiting to be sprayed!!

With the state of our world these days it seems hard to hold onto the joy.  I read this in my quiet time several days ago and it brought me such comfort.  I pray that we never forget that even though things may be unraveling all around us, God will hold us together if we will only hold onto Him.

Praying you have a blessed weekend friends!! Thanks for joining me now and again in my frazzled mess of life!!

Fun things coming to the blog in the near future – stay tuned!

Taking Back The House

At my house, sometimes this thing I call the clutter monster takes over.  It almost always happens during the summer.  No schedule + lots of activities + lots of travel + lazy summer days = the walls closing in with clutter.

So…yesterday as I found myself home alone, I decided to enjoy the space for a while and do some cleaning out and organizing.  I was going to take my house back from the clutter monster!!

It’s about that time to buy school supplies and get ready for school to start.  With that in mind, I decided to clean and and re-organize our entry closet which serves lots of purposes including storing school/office supplies.  It wasn’t as messy as it has been in the past, but still in was housing several things that didn’t belong there and lots of leftover supplies had just been thrown in at the end of school in May.  I got so excited about the organizing that I didn’t take a single before pic. I’ll let you imagine the madness in your head – it’s probably worse than anything you could dream up.  🙂

I have found, and I’m pretty sure I’ve shared before, that the easiest way to re-organize is to take everything out of a space, evaluate what you have, then put everything back in the most logical space.

That’s just the way it went down, and this is how it looked when I finished.  I’ll share more about the school/office supply organization soon.

Cleaning out this area spurred me on to keep going. Something about having a cleared space or surface that feels so good!!
I worked from one room to another.  Clearing off floors, spaces, surfaces.

This pile of trash is a testament to what was going on around here.  At the end of the day, I sat down and put my feet up and breathed in a deep refreshing breath.

We live here so the mess will probably be back tomorrow, but it’s okay.  My encouragement to the mother’s out there – sometimes it’s okay to allow the mess.

People > things I say.

But, then sometimes it’s great to have order again.

I’m excited be guest posting at Remodelaholic.com tomorrow!! Sharing our kitchen island DIY update with all their lovely readers.

What’s On The Heart of This Mama

No tips or DIY’s today, just some words from this mother’s heart.  I haven’t whined to you guys in a while, but today’s post might just be full of whining, so I won’t be upset if you just scroll through the pictures. 🙂  Sometimes it helps my heart to put my words down in written form, maybe you can relate.

I can’t live in denial any longer.  In the next month, my 1st baby will move thousands of miles away to start a new chapter in his life at college,

and my last baby will be entering middle school.

And then of course there are those in-between kiddos – a Junior in high school, and a boy deep in the throws of tween/teen – taller than me with the cutest squeaky voice.

My heart aches just a little bit everyday, while I study their faces in an effort to memorize every freckle.  They ask me why I stare – “no reason you’re just beautiful/handsome.” (enter eye-roll here)

I know this is all part of the beautiful dance of parenthood, but man, nothing can prepare you for this part.  How in the world are you to invest 18 years (not to mention the months/years before they are born, praying for, planning for) into these creatures and then let them go.

Roots and wings.  I pray that we have given and are giving them roots and wings.  Roots to know who they are and what they believe.  Roots to know they always have a safe place to come back to.  Wings to feel confident that they are ready to take on the world.  Wings to know The One who is keeping them afloat.

So if you see me over the course of the next month and I seem a little distracted, just act like everything is normal.  🙂 I’ll get by with a little help from my friends, and My Jesus!!

More About Marriage and Get Aways {Family Friday}

Hello all!!  Did ya miss me??  I sure missed you!! But, the break was definitely a good thing!!  Now that we are home, I am ready to get back into the swing of things, including blogging things.
Let me just start by saying, taking this trip was THE best thing my hubby and I could have done last week!!  We did n.o.t.h.i.n.g. but lay on the beach, walk on the beach, read on the beach, and eat.  (And apparently take selfies – HA!!) No joke. It was fabulous.

Let me follow that up by saying, all married couples need to make time to get away.  If you have kids or not.  If your kids are little or big.  If you think you have the time or not.

Sadly, the last time we did this was 10 years ago. Oh, ya there have been several times over these past ten years when the kids have gone to grandma’s and we have stayed home alone – but it’s just not the same.
You don’t have to go far.  You don’t have to spend a lot of money.  You don’t have to do a lot of things.  But, do your marriage a favor and get away from life.

We had no idea how stressed we actually were. How tired we actually were.  How emotionally drained we actually were.  Until we took the time and removed ourselves, and actually allowed ourselves to truly rest.  We rested our minds, bodies, and soul.
We spent a lot of time reconnecting.  Talking about all the things we have tried to talk about at home and got nowhere.  It was such a lovely time of reconnecting and rejuvenating for our marriage.  We will not wait so long before we do it again.

Whether a few days, or a week – do it – take time for just the two of you – away.

Happy weekend friends, and I will be back next week with some fun things to share!!  🙂
