The Making of a Fall Mantel

I must confess that my mantel décor has stayed exactly the same since late winter/early spring. Once the Christmas decorations came down, it actually stood blank for quite some time…  😳

Then finally I couldn’t stand the blankness any longer so I threw a few spring-ish things up there. Keeping very neutral and basic knowing in my heart that it might very well be that way for a while. And, I was right. Here is where is stood a week ago.

The one thing I would love to pass on to you from 2015 is two-fold: don’t be afraid to try a DIY – you never know if you can until you try!! And, don’t let budget constraints keep you from making your house a home – look at it as a challenge to be creative!!

My goal here at frazzled JOY is to demonstrate how both of these things are possible! Wishing you and yours a happy new year!!

Home Tour – Family Room – New and Improved and Ready for Fall

Today is a a two-for-one-special. I finally took the time to photograph our family room, which has been undergoing a makeover since I started painting the brick way back when. (Search “family room” for other posts related to the progress of this room.) I feel like it is finished mostly (for now), so I’m sharing it with you today.  And I’m also sharing my minimal fall decorating! 🙂

Many of you know I just started a small big project in our second bathroom, that I have to complete in 6 weeks… So, it should be no surprise that I just pulled out my fall decorations a couple of days ago.

I have a lot of pictures to share, so I will try to keep the words minimal :).

I don’t decorate too heavily for fall ever, but this year I am keeping it even more simple, and I LOVE it. Just a few pumpkins and pine cones.
🙂

A great reminder to give thanks in all things. Come back Thursday for more One Room Challenge!

Trying Things On For Size

Hey there! Today I want to chat about furniture. Sometimes I get in a rut with furniture. I have things placed and I like them and I don’t change them. I used to move furniture around all the time in our previous home, but this house doesn’t seem to offer as many options. However, a month or so ago I got the bug to try a few new things.

While we were painting the family room, hubby and I started brainstorming and came up with a new layout.

It took a couple of days to adjust, but we love it. Here is what it looked like before.

It really functions better – all of the furniture is actually used now!

I had a bookshelf sitting in the garage that had moved out of one of the kids rooms, and one day I had a light bulb moment, and I moved it back inside.

I have been trying to find a solution for photo album storage. I don’t want them in a closet, because then they don’t get looked at, and if they are not being looked at then what’s the point.

This little corner of the hallway has served well as the “Greenwood Gallery” but now that the kids are older, this might be a better purpose.

Hubby picked up a basic kitchen cart this summer at a garage sale for $10. I had planned on using it outside on the patio, but I decided instead to try it out inside. In the kitchen.

I’ve always toyed with the idea of an island. Our kitchen is big, but not too big so there wouldn’t be room for anything large. Before I do any refinishing of this piece I’d like to live with it in this spot for a while to see if it’s going to work.

Sometimes it’s good to try things on for size and fit before making a big commitment. We shall see how these things go. 🙂

In The Quiet

Good morning friends. I am writing to you from the quiet.

My house was still bustling with activity until today. My college boy is back at school, my others have been back in the groove for a week or so, and this morning, as hubby left for work, I realized that it was just me.

Now, you might think this would make me sad. And, on some levels it does. But, then there is my brain that so welcomes the quiet. In the quiet I can hear my thoughts, the thoughts of The Lord, and things can actually get organized in my head!! It’s a beautiful thing really. I know, I know, I could have this everyday if I could just talk myself into getting up before the sun. But, that just doesn’t work for me since I’m a bit of a night owl. So, I welcome mornings like today.

I have many things to share with you in the coming days. I was hoping to get some things photographed this morning that I have been working on, but the clouds came. I’m thankful for the clouds – it’s been 100 degrees around here the past few days, but clouds do not work for taking pics.

I am working on bringing in a little bit of fall.

I am putting finishing touches on the family room update.

I am working on a couple of tweaks in the kitchen (I’m beginning to wonder if this room will ever be done.)

And, I am scheming plans for our 2nd bathroom (“finally” say the kids).

I still plan to share with you some how-to’s for the patio makeover, and I am working on some great organization projects as well.

These are just a few sneak peeks to hopefully bring you back to see more! 🙂

See why the quiet is so welcome!? There are so many things swimming around in my head right now! One. thing. at. a. time.
