We’ve covered all the more private spaces in the home and discussed how they should function for YOUR family. Now, let’s talk about the more public spaces in your home. Thankfully there aren’t as many of these ;).
Basically we are talking the kitchen, dining room/area, living room, and guest bath. These spaces require a little bit of extra attention because not only do they need to function for YOUR family but they also need to function for your guests.
So, how do we accomplish that you ask??? Good question. For family functionality, it’s the same – make sure things are easy and comfortable for YOUR family based on how YOUR family functions. For instance, I would love a clean counter top in the kitchen, but as I have said, our family works best with things that are visible and easily accessible. So, the things that are used on an everyday basis are on the counters, whether they are pretty or not.
For guest functionality, make sure that your guests feel welcome and comfortable to come into your home, and make sure they can access what they might need with ease. Your guests should not have to look too far (or look at all) for the basics. When a home is set up to be functional, a guest can generally find the towels, or the glasses with little effort.
Now, what about form. Since these spaces are seen and used by everyone in YOUR family everyday, these spaces should be pleasing to be in. Choose a paint color, a furniture arrangement, and fun accessories that fit YOUR families lifestyle and taste. No, you can’t please everyone, but you can find a balance that makes everyone comfortable. So, look around, move things around, take a second look at YOUR home. Sometimes when you’ve lived in a house for a longer period of time it’s easy to leave things the same, because that’s how it works. But, a new perspective is sometimes all you need to find something that works even better!!
