Ikea Rast Nightstand Hack

Are people still doing Ikea hacks?? I might be a little behind the game but I am still excited about having new custom nightstands for our master bedroom at a minimal cost!!

I started with two very simple Ikea pieces – the Rast dresser. Which are only $40 each. They come unfinished and with tiny little wooden knobs. Oh, and they are from Ikea, so of course you have to assemble them. That part is pretty simple. I tasked my 17 year old with that because he likes building things. 🙂

After assembling them there are so many possibilities. The wood is not the prettiest (lots of variation, lots of knots, a little on the yellow side), but smooth enough to be stained rather than painted. When we used these in our closet makeover I painted them to match our closet, but this time I decided to try some stain. I used this stain which I love the muted gray tones of. It took three coats to get rid of most of the yellow, but in the end I was happy with the outcome!

I decided that I wanted to try to find one long drawer pull rather than two knobs on each drawer. This was a task within itself since I didn’t want to pay more for the hardware than I paid for the dressers themselves. DLawless Hardware to the rescue!! I found these beauties for a great price!

I thought I might keep the shiny chrome finish, but once I got them on, I knew they were a bit much. So, more spray paint to the rescue. This time a Satin Nickel finish. Now they are perfect!

Here is what we had before. A couple of mismatched, hand-me-down tables that I painted the same color to give it some cohesiveness.

They did the job for several years. However, I love the idea of being able to hide away things in the drawers and for having more storage, because, let’s be honest, who doesn’t need that??

A simple “hack” on some inexpensive dressers and we now have this!

It just looks more finished in my opinion and I like that!! I have a few other projects in mind for a little master bedroom spruce-up. No major overhaul. Just a few fun details that have been on my list for a while now. 🙂
