Hey there friends!! If you’re coming over from Back to the South, welcome! I’m glad you’re here! Feel free to take some time and look around! Today I’m sharing with you our family room all decked out for Christmas. In my insta-stories a couple of weeks ago (when I was decorating) I mentioned that I had intended to keep the decor simple this year. But…I just love decorating for Christmas and once I got started I couldn’t stop! It’s okay though because it’s just for a season!! And I LOVE it!!
The first thing to go up every year is our tree. Usually the night of Thanksgiving when the rest of the family goes home, the tree comes down from the attic and I get to fluffing and making sure the lights work. And then, either later that night or the next day, we all decorate the tree as a family. We have a collection of ornaments that we have gathered over the years. Some from vacations, some cute personalized family ornaments, some gifts, and a lot of handmade ornaments from when the kids were younger. It is my favorite thing about decorating for Christmas. So many memories all in one place.
The next thing I usually decorate is the mantel. When I bought my flocked trees from Walmart this year, I also purchased some flocked garland. I used a flocked garland a regular garland that I have strung lights on. I kind of meshed them together so you could see a little bit of each and the lights. I added a red bead garland swagged in the front and moved on. Believe it or not, this is a pretty simple mantel for me. Ha!
I decided to stick with a traditional red and green color scheme this year, with a little bit of sparkle and twinkle. The sign was an after Christmas purchase from Kirkland’s last year, and the galvanized nativity is from The Plaid Pineapple a couple of year’s ago and is one of my favorite things. (here is a similar – a little smaller, but still cute)
I really thought I was done at that point, but all that white space was making me a little crazy. I tried several different things on the mantel itself, but nothing seemed quite right. The slanted ceiling almost always gives me problems. Then I remembered something I had seen on Instagram that I wanted to try – hanging ornaments from the ceiling! Yep! That was exactly what it needed!! I hung the ornaments with fishing line and a white thumb tac stuck into the ceiling above. The ornaments look like they’re floating!
Just a couple of trees, a couple of stars, and the cute packages from my tablescape to round things out.
Of course, our large nativity set always has a prominent place.
A few ornaments in a wood bowl (from Magnolia market) dresses up a shelf.
And lastly, the piano. It’s almost like having another mantel to decorate! I used another flocked + regular lighted garland across the top and down the side. A couple of collection of trees, a sweet holy family, and a chalkboard, and call it good!
I made the pillows on my new blue chairs several years ago. I love them on the chairs!! I decided to leave the table green for now. I thought it worked for the season. 🙂
I’ve joined some of my blogging buddies today to share our homes. Next on the hop is Living Large in a Small House! Be sure to “hop” on over and check out her Christmas decor!! And then, come back Thursday to see the rest our home!

Love the mantel! Hanging the ornaments to make them look like they were floating was so clever! I also like how you combined two garlands – it makes the garland look super thick and full!

Gorgeous living room! I love the mantel decor and I’m totally going to have to steal that idea of handing ornaments from the ceiling. It’s genius. Merry Christmas!
