Functionality At It’s Best

This month has been fun!!  I hope you have been inspired to love what you have rather than to just live with it.  Maybe you’ve noticed throughout this series that I have made it a point to say things must work for YOUR family.  I truly believe that!!  I don’t think there is a right or wrong way!!  I do think that you should love where you are.  Make it work the best way you can.  Make it a space that not only works, but that you love.  Can I say that again??  Don’t get stuck waiting for the next best thing, love what you have now!!

Go and do and inspire others!!  Thanks for tagging along this month!  And, now, for a long winter’s nap….Ha!!  Just kidding ;).

A Functional Kitchen is a Must

We talked yesterday about how people love to gather in the kitchen.  I also mentioned that it’s good if you enjoy being in your kitchen. Functionality of the space has a lot to do with that!  If you can never find what you need, or if you are constantly going in circles trying to get anything done, then your kitchen might need a little overhaul.

After 13 years of living in this home, the kitchen is as functional as I can get it for now.  I have moved, tweaked, stored, and arranged things in lots of different ways over those years, and I’m sure even though I say it’s good – something will change in the next year or two!!

Life is constantly changing.  Schedules, routines, the ebb and flow.  So changes in our home are inevitable.  I am not a morning person so I do everything I can to make my morning run smoothly.  Coffee is a requirement.  Making the coffee is something I wish I could wiggle my nose and make happen.  But, I do find that having everything in arms reach in this coffee station makes it a little easier. (maybe you can tell, some of these pics are pre-kitchen-update :))

I loathe making lunches for my kids, but I hate wasting money on school lunches even more. These lunch bins I started a few years back, make morning lunch making less work.

We do not have a pantry.  Probably my largest complaint about this kitchen.  So, storing baking supplies can be a little tricky.  I changed to this system a while back and I love it!!

Keeping things corralled on the counters in trays or baskets makes for less mess and easy clean-up.

Schedules are crazy around here, and keeping up with it all is a challenge.  And, so is meal planning.  I make both of these as simple as I can.

Oddly, this is one area of the house that I am constantly purging and paring down.  New things come in and old things must go out.  I have limited storage for cooking supplies and dishes so it is a have to thing more than a want to thing.
Smaller space + more things = chaos.  And chaos doesn’t work for me!!

How do you keep your kitchen functioning for you??

Kitchens – The Heart of the Home

We all know that food brings people together. So, it’s natural for guests to congregate in the kitchen!

For 11 years or so, I put up with our kitchen.  I did little things here and there to make it more efficient and functional for our family.  All the while dreaming of something better.

But, this was another space that was an all or nothing space.  I wanted to take down walls, moved appliances, and add a pantry.  If I couldn’t do that then I didn’t want to do anything.  I would just wait.

Wait for what??

To win the lottery??

So, finally one day in December, I took out a bucket of primer and a brush and took the first stroke.

The most terrifying thing – DIY wise – that I had ever done.  Of course, once that first stroke had happened, there was no turning back.

Not only did I not stop, I never looked back, and I don’t regret a thing.  Except for the fact that I waited so long!!

We went on vacation this summer for the first time after the kitchen was completed and it was the first time that I actually smiled when I walked into the house, into my kitchen.  Strange huh?

Sometimes you need a little form to make a space function.  If you don’t like being in there then how are you ever going to want to do anything in there??

My mood is so much different in my kitchen now!!

The Guest Bath

Hello peeps!  We are 28 days into our 31 day series!  Whew!  I hope you have been inspired!!

Today I’d like to address the guest bath.  I must first go on record, however, to say that we don’t technically have a ‘guest’ bath.  We live in a four bedroom, two bath home.  That means – one master bathroom and one bathroom for everyone else – kids and guests alike.

This has proved to be a challenge all these years. The biggest challenge of course being making sure the kids keep it clean…or at least tidy.

I have done a few things to make that possible which I touched on in an earlier post.

But, how do we make guests feel comfortable in our guest bath?  Well, I think as with any other space that guests are using, the most important thing is functionality.  They need to be able to find the things they need.  Toiletry needs, soap and hand towels are essentials. If they are over-night guests then possibly towels, and shower items.  You definitely want to have everything on hand for guests to get clean – even if no one uses that bathroom regularly.  Invest in some travel soaps, toothpaste, extra toothbrushes, extra combs and hairbrushes (left in packages) just in case someone forgets something.  Here are a couple of ideas in that direction.

Again, please, please, please pin from the original source for these photos by clicking on the links below each photo.  This way the person responsible for the loveliness gets the credit. Thanks!:)

But, more than anything keep it user friendly. Not too over-the-top decorated that people are afraid to use it.  And, not so messy that people are afraid to use it.  You know what I’m sayin people!!

Organized Gathering Spaces

I’m back today with more about our gathering spaces.  In the places where we gather there is always going to be stuff.  But the stuff must be contained, limited to only the loveliest of stuff, and corralled in a way that works for YOUR family.

The stuff that accumulates in our living room – DVD’s, x-box and wii games, books, board games, magazines, and blankets.  Yes, blankets – no one is ever the same temperature around here!!

I do my best to artfully ‘hide’ most of these things.  We are blessed with built-ins in this home, and although I don’t really dig the placement of them, I love the function of them.

Books are inter-mingled in the bookshelves of course (and some in the cabinets). DVD’s and games are stowed in the cabinets as well.  I shared with you here how I organize our game cabinet.

And, yes, it needs to be straightened every-so-often.  Which is most definitely a kid job, since they are the ones who usually mess it up!  🙂  DVD’s (and CD’s hubby and I just can’t bear to part with) are stored in alphabetical order in these babies.

Much easier than all those cases – and more condensed.

I have had this wicker chest for years.  I don’t even remember where I got it honestly.  I know I didn’t pay much for it, but it has been good to us. For years in held mittens, gloves and hats, but when we re-did our entry it became a game holder and I love that!! Controllers, games, (and a few VHS movies that hubby and I can’t part with) live in it now.  Out of sight but very accessible!

Blankets really are another issue.  I know that sounds funny, but we have a lot.  People love to give them as gifts, and we love to receive them!! I have always had a basket of some sort to hold them.  The basket has grown over the years, but none the less – corralled!!

Magazines aren’t as big of a thing, as we don’t subscribe to many, but for the few that come in, I like them to be handy and this basket works for that.

Having a place for things that makes since for YOUR family makes clean-up quick and easy!!

And for me, honestly, this is most important component of functionality!!  Clear, un-cluttered spaces make me happy and calm and clear-minded.  I have a lot of trouble functioning in cluttered spaces – I’m too easily distracted – can anyone relate??
