My Top 5 Uses For Vinegar

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend! It has been oh so hot here the past few days, but we thoroughly enjoyed our time with family and friends! Yesterday I took some time to rest and recover the house. I don’t know about you, but we are having fun, the last thing I worry about is cleaning up! HA!

About 3 years ago I got tired of spending mega bucks on cleaning supplies and started researching alternatives. Of course with the help of Pinterest I found a ton! I have been making my own laundry soap ever since which I love and a few other homemade cleaners that I swear by.

One of my favorite all-natural cleaning weapons is vinegar. It really has so many uses but today I would like to highlight my 5 favorite.

Valentine’s Day Table

Yesterday I played around with table decorating!!  It really is something that is so much fun!!  I always challenge myself to use what I have, and if I have to add, I do it on the cheap.

I’ve shared with you before our family Valentine’s dinner tradition.  One of the best parts of this tradition for me, is an excuse to set the table!

I kept it simple this year, and I love the outcome! I just love it when things come out as good or better than the vision in my head. 🙂

I used my black and white gingham table runners that I made at Thanksgiving.  I added some kraft paper placemats.  Red chargers, white napkins and plates.
The placemats were simply cut from a roll of kraft paper and I added the XO with black craft paint.

The only things I purchased were the red paper heart doilies that I used in the center and on top of the plates, and the tulips that were used in the centerpiece.  I gathered together crystal bud vases and candlesticks to cluster together for the centerpiece.
So, I did this table for about $7.  When I buy dishes and such, I try to buy things that will go with lots of different schemes – white plates, white napkins, crystal, even the red chargers are very versatile.  I don’t really have the storage for lots of different dishes, so this works best for me.
Here are a couple of pictures at night with the candles lit.

I can’t wait for our family dinner!  🙂

Breathing New Life Into Our Family Room

Hey friends!!  Hope everyone is doing well!!  I’m happy to have the sun shining here today!!

In my post for the new year, I mentioned wanting to update our family room.  Although I have done a couple of things here and there and there to brighten up the space, it still doesn’t feel very cohesive to me.

Here it is at Christmas time.

I know I’m not the only one who fell in love with the HGTV dream home this year!!  Several of my favorite bloggers featured it on there site.  The light and airy cape cod feel is so what I would love!!

We are missing a few elements – lots of windows, skylights, hard wood floors, and of course the beach – but I’m hoping to come close to this feel with our update.  Here are a few more pics to give you an idea of what I’m thinking.

1.  We have a center beam in our vaulted ceiling, and I have toyed with the idea of adding some down the sides.

2.  The fireplace is getting a makeover.  I’m still on the fence between more white wash, or full-on paint.  And, I plan on trimming out part of that brick wall with wood.  And, of course a natural wood mantel (see the new mantel here).

3. I am on the hunt for a couple of chairs to re-cover in a fun print or pattern.

4.  We are in need of new furniture, and I am currently trying to convince my hubby that white slip-covers are the way to go.  🙂

5.  I went all-white with our built-ins a couple of years ago and loved it, but I think I’m ready to pull some color back in by painting the backs.

6.  We have one smallish ottoman right now that we all fight over.  We either need a giant one or two.  I love the idea of using something with pattern and interest to cover it with to contrast the white couch.

I plan to go with a warm white on the walls.  I love the flexibility it gives you with all the other decorating.  What warm white do you love??

So, there you have it – a plan.  It’s good to corral all my thought together!!  Who knows where I will start or how long it will take (because as usual it will all be done on a snug budget), but at least I have a plan right?  Ha!

Quick and Easy Taco Soup

Hey there friends!!  Is the month of December as crazy and hectic for you as it is for us?? Between Christmas shopping, kids sports, Christmas programs, and Christmas parties I find it hard to find time to cook! But, after a while eating out gets old, and expensive.

This week I whipped up one of our family favorites that is really so quick and simple – Taco Soup.

Maybe you have your own version of this, but I get asked about it all the time (cuz it’s so easy), so I thought I would share.

Several years back I was looking for a tortilla soup recipe, but everyone I found had ingredients I didn’t have and I was not going to the store.  In my search, I also stumbled across a couple of taco soup recipes.  So, I took a little bit from each one, based on what I had on hand, and came up with this.

Taco Soup

1 – 1 1/2 lb. ground beef OR 3 chicken breasts
1 can of corn
1 can of diced tomatoes OR rotel
1 can of black beans
1 can of kidney beans
Taco seasoning

First step – cook the meat.  If you are using chicken I have the best tip for some of you!  Own a kitchenaid mixer?

Put the cooked chicken in with the paddle attachment, turn on low and watch that chicken shred!!  So much easier!

Second step – dump everything in.

this time I did not have rotel but I did have a can of green chilies, so I added that
Third step – stir and heat.  Everything in that pot is cooked, it just needs to heat.  🙂

The longer it cooks the better it tastes, because it gives time for the flavors to mix together.  But if you only have 30 minutes for it to simmer, no problem, still yummy.  I have also cooked this in the crockpot.  Works great.  I use this homemade taco seasoning (tweaked a bit – I don’t care for cumin)

Don’t you love my fancy container 🙂
which I love because I can put in as much or as little as I want

 – plus I know exactly what’s in it.

This recipe really is fool proof!!

We like ours with a little shredded cheddar cheese on top and tortilla chips!  YUM!!
Have a great weekend friends and enjoy!!
